Central Nervous System:

Picture

In the Central Nervous System (CNS)  there are two components in the CNS called the
  • Brain
  • Spinal Cord

Air pollution affects the brain by ultrafine particles that are very small in size. These small sized particles are able to get past the blood brain barrier which leads you to the brain. These ultrafine particles are carrying metals harmful for our brain. These particles cause severe brain damage. Metals include Vanadium and Nickel.  Neuroblastoma and Brain damage are long term effects of being prone to a place with lots of air pollution. Air pollution affects our spinal cord from the cancer called Neuroblastoma. It starts in the nerve cells of the Nervous System and makes its way down to the spinal cord.

Definitions:

Nickel: a hard malleable ductile silvery metallic element that is resistant to corrosion; used in alloys; occurs in minerals such as pentlandite, smaltite, garnierite and millerite.

Vanadium:  a soft silvery white toxic metallic element used in steel alloys; it occurs in several complex minerals including carnotite and vanadinite

Neuroblastoma: It is a type of cancer (tumor) containing embryonic nerve cells. It also affects the spinal cord.

Brain Damage:
It is an injury to the brain that impairs its functions permanently.
