Circulatory System:

In the Circulatory System there are two components called the
  • Heart
  • Blood

Air pollution can affect our Circulatory System by entering our blood stream. After pollutants are inhaled they are absorbed via intestines or skin. Once they enter our blood stream their hamrful effects are distributed throughout our body. Since blood passes through all the body's organs and tissues, blood can carry toxic substances from air pollution. Chemicals produced from air pollution include benzene, lead, mercury, carbon monoxide, volatile nitrites, pesticides and herbicides etc. All of these have harmful effects on our blood and the systems that transport blood to our organs and tissues.

Air pollutants can interfere with the function of the blood, which can result in acute or chronic effects on our body. For example Hemoglobin is a part of red blood cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissues of our body. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a product of incomplete combustion and can bind 200 x more firmly to hemoglobin than oxygen. This can seriosuly interfere with the blood's ability to transport oxygen. Severe exposure can result in death due to asphyxiation or permanent damage to the Central Nervous System (CNS).

Pollution can effect our heart by giving us diseases such as Cardiovascular Disease and Asthma. The heart relies on the circulatory system to pump appropriate amounts of blood to each organ and tissue. If this process gets messed up, it can create complications within our body. causing heart failure and death.

Definitions:

Benzene: It is a colorless liquid, which is highly flammable and can cause cancer.

Carbon Monoxide:  Known as CO, it is an odorless poisonous gas that is a product of incomplete combustion

Hemoglobin: It basically transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues of the body.

Asphyxiation:
It is basically like suffocation (being deprived of oxygen)

Asthma: It is a respiratory disorder, usually identified by trouble breathing or wheezing

Cardiovascular Disease: It is a disease of the heart and the blood vessels.
